High concentrations of phosphates, in particular, intervene positively on the metabolism of green algae, while brown algae proliferate with high concentrations of silicates. Besides producing the undesired effect of aiding the proliferation of algae, high levels of phosphate can inhibit the calcification process in coral and other invertebrates. The possible causes of the increase in phosphate in an aquarium are various, including the decomposition of dead organisms or vegetation, the decomposition of uneaten food, impurities in the original water or the chemical additives used. The reduction in these phosphates (and secondly the silicates) is therefore a fundamental operation for the correct maintenance of an aquarium. In most cases, the concentration of phosphates are recommended at 0.05 ppm in order to keep the aquarium free of infesting algae. Lower values, namely 0.01 ppm are necessary for marine and barrier aquariums, in order to allow the correct growth of hard coral.
