Handy Dandy in color!
Full of direct, specific knowledge and ideas. Short, concise information that is pertinent with a little humor thrown in. I am utilizing the planner and journal online ( small fee). I find it useful for keeping records. The planner allows you to import from last season when saved. I do wish they had an actual app. That could be saved to home page.

Best Book for Beginners
Love this book! Five stars. Two thumbs up. All the good things. Recommend to EVERYONE!!I finished my second year of gardening and I wish I’d had this book two years ago! It covers a little bit of everything without going so in depth it's overwhelming, and without glazing over it leaving you frustrated and more confused. The charts make it automatically worth the buy. It has companion planting, pH and water needs for each plant, frost dates, and tons of others. It has lots of pages for you to write in the book for notes (which I won’t do because that’s sacrilege, but they are good ideas for pages in my garden binder). Each veggie has about three pages dedicated to it. Planting, Care, Pests/Diseases, Harvest/Storage are covered. Plus recommended varieties, general info and tips (like rosemary will deter Mexican bean beetles). It covers fertilizing, troubleshooting and so many helpful things, specific to a certain veggie. It also has amusing quotes at the start of every chapter.I really can’t say enough wonderful things about it. This is my absolute favorite gardening book and I think it should be on everyone’s shelf.Definitely the perfect Christmas gift for the gardener in the family!

Good introductory level stuff.
The nature of a printed photo makes some of the plant images too grainy to discern their actual appearance relative to the photo, but they are generally large and varied enough to be useful for plant identification. The graphic depicting typical locations where they can be found in the US is also helpful. Describing plant uses and identifying features for such a large territory is an ambitious undertaking and I feel like the authors have done a good job of capturing the highlights. If you try to use this book for any length of time, you may find yourself longing for something more regionally specific or more detailed about plant uses. However, I do like the way the information is presented and there is quite a lot here.If you're debating between this book and one of their others, I also purchased the lost book of herbal remedies. Between the two, if I could only pick one book to carry with me on a survival outing or something, I would go with the lost book of herbal remedies. This books is probably more useful when attempting to ID a plant, but the other is more helpful at knowing what to do with them.

Just enough great advice to start a garden, without overwhelming
This is a well-balanced beginner's guide to gardening from a trusted source: the oldest publication in North America. It captures generations of wisdom about soil management, planting, and harvesting, while remaining brief and approachable to novice growers. Specific care instructions for common vegetables makes it a great reference source throughout the growing season. It's a solid foundation of knowledge for your first season, without overwhelming you with botany.
