Faulty Illustrations, Returned for Refund
I ordered "Turners Sketchbooks" in late June 2021 and received my copy shortly thereafter. The copy that I received had a remandered mark, it was 9.25" x 11", hardcover and was wrapped/sealed in what appeared to be manufacturer's cellophane. (How did the remandered mark get under the cellophane?)The book that I received had way too many, perhaps 60%, of the illustrations that were either too light or too dark to read. This may be a factor of this book being remandered? If all printed copies/versions of this book contain the same unreadable drawings and/or watercolour sketches then this is obviously due to the blatant incompetence of Mr. Warrell. Why would any individual publish material that can NOT be read? The only reason that I can think of is: GREED.I can understand that aged pencil drawings can be difficult to print effectively; however, Thames and Hudson found a way to do so in both Egon Schiele, Drawings and Watercolors by Jane Kallir and Gustav Klimt, Drawings and Watercolors by Rainer Metzger. Your selection of Tate Publishing and their failure to perform is a grave blight on your reputation. Further you owe everyone that purchased a copy of this book your sincere apology. Fortunately, I purchased this book through Amazon. I am only out time and regretted effort.

Disappointing
I pre-ordered this book two months ago and was very excited to finally receive it. What a disappointment! The book looks nice on outside and I could tell it was printed on very good paper by the heavy weight, but when I looked inside, I didn't see much. The illustrations are faded, you will mostly see light brown old paper and not the drawings. I understand that pencil doesn't show well when scanned or photographed, but when at least half of the book are pencil drawings, you may wonder why make a book of pencil drawings if you can't see them.I am returning the book with sadness.

Five Stars
Very specialised and interesting for study.

Interesting text, rotten illustrations.
Interesting material on Turner but the photos of the sketches were done by a Dave Lambert on the Tate staff and he was clearly just going through the motions. Most of the early sketches are nearly invisible and are just as bad on the Tate website. These actually look like unedited scans. The Tate should be ashamed.

Poor design, boring text
How could you mess this up? So many poor choices of vague, indistinct sketches, poorly reproduced and crammed together on the page. Boring commentary with limited insight into the artist. The title and the cover are good. Some of the colour sketches are wonderful. Overall though a huge let down.

Good Quality Art Book
This was bought as a christmas gift and was very well received. It is printed ver nicely and has a good feel of quality about it. It is of a decent size and weight which is nice as a gift. The work inside is very nice and although some of the drawings appear faded, you can still make out the important features. All in all it is a very nice alternative look at the work of Turner.

This book is a visual joy. It’s inspiring to see Turners techniques and there are plenty examples of his work.
