Highly Praised Works
As with his other book, "Pilgrims Progress", this book is outstanding. Outside of the Bible itself, I am hard pressed to read any finer literature that fully brings about the ability to visualize the Scriptures and the circumstances of life as you walk through and experience every level of your walk with God. John Bunyan fully gives you the ability to "see" things in a finite way that expresses the infinite. If you want to be able to visualize the characteristics of the many different aspects of life, then this is the book that you want, along with "Pilgrims Progress", its sequel "Christiana", and "The Life and Death of Mr. Badman". These four books are similar in the way they are written and Bunyan's imaginative text brings out practical and necessary lessons that everyone needs to know in such a way that you can visualize every element of character that you meet within your Christian walk.

The Holy War: battle for mankind's soul.
Although I have read this book numerous times before, and had given it away to someone in need, I still enjoyed it immensely.I heartely recommend this book to any born-again Christian who enjoys reading good conservative literary material. However, I recommend that the reader be quite knowledgable on the Bible because John Bunyan has used allegories to describe the war that goes on in every human: the war between God and Satan over the human soul. If you, dear reader, have ever read "Pil-grim's Progress" by John Bunyan, then you'll understand the necessity for being up on your Bible knowledge. John Bunyan did not write these books to be entertaining, he wrote them with the purpose of being spiritually helpful in understanding what every believer goes through. I myself am a born-again believer since 1975. There is a great deal of literary "junk-food" that tries to pass as being Christian, but is as shallow as a child's wading pool. The "Holy War" is more than "meat and potatoes", it could be considered "gourmet" reading for a mature and hungry Christian soul.

The Holy War
This book, written in the same manner as 'Pilgrim's Progress,' (which most believers are more familiar with), depicts what transpires within the heart and mind of every believer. While the narrative depicts the Town, or Corporation of Mansoul as the primary location, what the Town of Mansoul is symbolic of is the inner life of each man and woman called to follow Christ, and the battle that each one of us must wage within, in order to actually do so.While 'Pilgrim's Progress' is more widely known, 'The Holy War' delves into where the battle-ground lies, and how to be an 'overcomer.' From a heavenly perspective, it matters not whether we live in the 1600's, or the present day, time is irrelevant as it relates to the Holy War that every believer is engaged in. I strongly recommend reading this insightful little book.

The Holy War in Modern English
This is a great book! I love John Bunyan's writings and wanted a small easily held book of this story. I bought this book in particular for my teenage boys to read, as they always love a good war/battle story - and this one talks of the most significant battle of all - the battle for our soul. In retrospect it would have been very beneficial for them to have read this in their preteen or early teen years - say 11 or 12 year olds. Not because it is geared to a younger age group - it most definitely is a very adult read. This is a powerful allegory of the spiritual battle we are in, with Diabolus (satan), battling Emmanuel (Christ). The struggles are well depicted and relate powerful to our present day lives. A very challenging and faith inspiring must read!

Abridgment! and a poor one at that!
It needs to be noted that this review is NOT for the Whitaker House abridgment. That work is actually quite well done, and I have come to enjoy it as a way to ramp-up to the original. It is a very nice read with helpful chapter divisions; a good place to start! The one star review is for the abridgment for "modern readers". It lacks the introduction poem, and replaces words like "crucified" for hanged. This is done in a crucial place where the allegory illustrates the crucifixion of the flesh. This editing seems to be done by some one perhaps not familiar with Bunyan or his work.I did have to buy a copy of this book it to find this out, and I asked the seller to update the product description, but to no avail. Here is a copy of the unabridged book from Amazon. The print is a bit small, but these are the real thing:Β The Holy War: Made by Shaddai upon Diabolus for the Regaining of the Metropolis of the World or the Losing and Taking Again of the Town of Mansoul This book has blessed many with a basic understanding of human psychology and the true nature of sin and our opposition.

It gives us clues how subtle sin can undo the best of intentions
This is one of the Christian classics written by John Bunyan. It reveals how even the most faithful can be taken off track by listening to the world-at-large instead of paying attention to God's letter to us, the Holy Bible. It is an engaging story for adults and children which helps to warn everyone we should be steadfast in our faith. It gives us clues how subtle sin can undo the best of intentions. Read this book.

Afraid to say unreadable
I've greatly enjoyed others of Bunyan's works, Pilgrim's Progress, Prayer, The Acceptable Sacrifice, so it was a surprise that this one was so unreadable. To me it's prose style has somehow become wince-worthy to modern eyes. It might still appeal to be read to young children.
