Pretty much everything you need to terminate network cables.

Previously I had last terminated network cable back in 2007 or so, but I bought this kit to upgrade a network over the last couple months, and it has worked pretty well, especially given the price point. The continuity tester is pretty cheaply made (there's some loose plastic inside of it, which you can see through the lights, and it's kinda hard to removed cables from it), but.. it works and has helped me identify a number of issues with existing cabling in the walls and identifying which unlabeled cable is which, as well as finding some wires with wacky termination patterns. The only real couple issues I found in using this kit are that the male-end crimp-tool and the punchdown tool do not cut off wires in pass-through connectors or keystones, respectively, and there's nothing else in the kit that can make those kinds of necessary cuts for you. Additionally, most modern wire (category 6 or higher, sometimes 5e too) come with a spline/plastic separator in the middle to separate the cable's pairs, and there's nothing to cut that, either. If they had included a little snip of some sort, it would have been perfect, but you will need to find something to use for that. The only other real issue is that the stripping tools are... at least for me, difficult to use without damaging the wires under the sheath. It can be done with practice (and did cause me some problems where I had to re-do my cuts a couple times), but again, for the price, not unreasonable.Lastly, the case itself is actually pretty nice, and I'll be honest, is one of the big reasons I chose this kit. (I like to have everything in one place, and organized, so I don't need to think too hard about what I need for a project; just grab the case and go!) That said, it doesn't have any internal labeling, there isn't really a spot for the documentation/directions that come with it for the various tools and cable layout options, and it's easy to forget where things go, but,if you remove the male cable ends, you could even sub in a couple other needed tools. Overall, I really can't complain since it's served me very well for the cost.

I got this mainly for the tester

I got this for a networking project where I ran 40+ RJ45 drops.Let me break down what I used and didn't use.Tester: Used for RJ45. Worked great. The only thing I wish it did was automatically switch ports at the patch panel so I didn't have to run back and forth so much. :D But this was the main reason for getting this kit. I wanted a tester that would work well to make sure I wired everything correctly. It was a success.Crimper: Used for one cable. It worked. No complaints, but that was only one cable.Terminals: These are mostly metal. Very sturdy. Other than crimping them and testing them, they seemed to work fine. I used the cable for testing each drop.Yellow wire stripper. Worked great. It did not cut a single wire inside the cover. The depth of the cuts was perfect.Zipties. These were a little weak. I used almost all of them, but if you pulled hard on them, they'd break. Not sure how long they'll survive in the ceiling/walls if they have anything get caught on them.I didn't use any of the other components of this kit, so I can't rate anything else. I had another punch tool and this was going to be the backup, but my main punch tool was great, so I didn't need it.

Decent tools, but the cable tester died in one day

I bought this kit because I was planning to run some Ethernet lines through my house and I needed the tools to do it. This kit had the two tools I really needed, a crimper and a punchdown tool, and was inexpensive. Since I'm using them for what is pretty much a one-time job, I was looking for low cost over super-high-quality.Overall the kit is pretty decent. The crimper, stripper, and punchdown tools all seem well made and the included RJ45 connectors are shielded, which was a nice surprise, though they are sized for Cat-5 cable and I'm running Cat-6, so I can't use them for this project. The kit includes additional odds and ends that will prove useful, like cable ties and an RJ45 coupler. My only complaint with the whole kit (and the reason I deducted a star) was the cable tester. This wasn't the reason I bought the kit in the first place, and I wasn't really expecting much from this tester, but it seems to have worked for about 5 tests before crapping out. I had a bunch of old Ethernet cables lying around and I wanted to see which ones were good, so I started testing them. One of my cables had a broken clip, so I cut it off and repaired it (manly for practice, as I haven't crimped a cable since taking data communications classes in college some 15+ years ago). After fixing it, I put it back on the tester and the thing got stuck on the "1" light. I tried some of the other cables that tested fine before and they also got suck on "1." Despite this, I plugged my repaired cable in to a switch and successfully connected a computer to the network, so my fix appears to have worked. Not the end of the world, though the tester would have come in handy when I start to terminate the cable I pulled.Overall, it's a pretty decent kit, I just don't recommend buying it for the cable tester alone.

Great value and great results.

A great product and a fantastic value. I just moved into a newly constructed house. There are 8 Cat5 jacks throughout the house but they left me with all the wires unlabeled with no terminals. I purchased this kit in the hopes I could finish the work myself. The kit came with everything I knew I’d need but also something I didn’t. Ok, there’s a small learning curve and I didn’t do well on my first two attempts but I quickly learned and every one after that went perfectly. After attaching the plug I plugged it into the master test unit and then went through the house with the remote until I located the connected jack. Simple.I even discovered that one of the jacks had a bad connection and I was able to use the “push-down tool” (the thing I mentioned not knowing I’d need) to fix it. I can only imagine how much money I saved by not having to hire someone to come in and do the job.Ok, here are my two tips. First, do your best to completely straighten out the twisted wires and lay them flat and as tightly together between your forefinger and thumb and them cut them straight across to make them COMPLETELY even. Then inserting them into the plug should meet only slight resistance. If you have to force it you probably have something out of alignment.Secondly, after you firmly crimp the plug with it fully inserted into the tool, release the pressure only enough to allow you to pull the plug back out SLIGHTLY and then apply crimping pressure again. The components is this kit and even the case it comes in feel high quality. The tester is not just a continuity tester, it actually has some smarts built in and I would have been willing to pay as much for it as I did the entire kit.Great value and great results.

PERFECT starter kit

This has EVERYTHING you need to run Ethernet in your home, including a healthy number of RJ45 ends. The crimper/cutter tool can also do RJ11 ends if you are looking to make phone cables. The kit did not come with RJ11 ends, though. Thus far, I've used it to make both a phone cable and an Ethernet cable. Both work flawlessly. The RJ45 ends it comes with are shielded, which is a nice touch, and the rubber protection jackets prevent the plastic tab from getting ripped off.The jacket cutter tool is extremely sharp and works great.Haven't used the tester yet - it takes 9V batteries, and I don't usually buy them.... I personally didn't feel the need to test right now, but in the future it will be handy if I run into troubles.I also have not used the punch down tool, but it seems to be hefty and high quality. The zip ties don't seem to be of the highest quality, but honestly they are just icing on the cake.If you are looking to DIY some hardline Ethernet in your home, this kit and a 1000 foot box of Cat5E or Cat6 are what you need. 10/10, would recommend.
