My two sons, age 7 & 8, are rarely aware of how loud they are at times. Part of this is just that they're boys, part of it is they are somewhat neurodivergent and aren't always aware of themselves. Most of the time it's fine, in public they've been learning to control themselves. However, car trips can be painful so I've been searching for a way to "gamify" their volume in the car. This is the perfect solution because they're both into technology and tools.I've already explained to them what this is, how it works, what decibels mean, and where permanent hearing damage can occur. They were very into the concept and how their voices could be measured for loudness. We agreed to set the alarm on the app at 85 db and that if they make it through a car trip without setting off the alarm they get a prize.First trip out worked perfectly! They managed to stay under 85 db and won their prize!The unit itself seems well-made. I can only judge the accuracy anecdotally, but it seems about right. My noisy refrigerator runs about 58 db. Very quiet conversations run about 60 db. I don't think this is a professional grade unit but, for what I'm trying to do it's a nice little unit at a nice price.

I use this meter to record noise from neighbors at night that exceed the city ordinance and disrupts my sleep.After using it for about 2 weeks I’m finding it’s starting to skip several seconds at a time .. literally 2-10 seconds between each reading .. so stomping and banging happens and when I go check the data on my phone from the meter… there are huge gaps in the information .. and most often the moment I needed metered was not recorded in the data. Even at best one of the two meters I bought (both are this red meter) has started recording every 2 seconds consistently.. I’ve changed the batteries, turned it off and on, disconnect and reconnect to the phone.. after a minute or so it’s back to only recording every 2 seconds.. i don’t see any option to contact the seller for support thusly I’ll share my experience with the public. Otherwise having calibrated it I can say it is accurate.. but connecting your phone and recording for a period of time then it goes skitz..

I've been in need of a decibel meter for HVAC and general apartment maintenance. This little gadget has worked great so far. I've mostly used to keep track of comfort sound levels of furnaces, portable window units and appliances like dishwashers. It is VERY sensitive at a close distance. I'm hoping to be able to use it in a few other job settings over the next few months. I've yet to tinker with the Bluetooth setting as I do not need it and it is unnecessary hassle at the moment. Fingers crossed it will last a few years or more.

EDIT WITH MORE RECENT OBSERVATIONS:I noticed from the beginning that this unit reported levels around 36dB even in the quietest parts of my house (think closet full of hanging clothes). Since then, I've had the opportunity to compare it to another meter and some phone apps. These other measurement tools consistently report a lowest level 3 to 6 dB lower than this unit reports. (At higher levels, all the tools more or less agree.)I'm not taking away another star for this, because I don't have true calibration tools or a high-quality meter for reference, but I'm considering this unit to be "on probation" now. I'll be double-checking its readings until I can figure out what's going on.PREVIOUS REVIEW:This is a simple, basic sound meter, very easy to use and easy to read. Its controls are minimal, but sufficient. The display is highly legible, and response time is very quick.Two warnings, though:1) The current listing for this product AND the manual included with the product mention A-weighting vs. C-weighting measurements. THIS PRODUCT SUPPORTS ONLY A-WEIGHTING. There's a place on the display for weighting type, but no control to change it. A-weighting is probably what most users will need, but I have a noise-nuisance application that could really use C weighting. I'm not deducting a star for this, because the listing DOES accurately indicate that C-weighting is only available on another product in the same line.2) The phone app for this wants permission to share precise location, personal contact information, web browsing history, photos and videos... why? No, thank you. The app does offer a remote readout, remote control, and recording over time, but without further clarification I don't trust it on my phone. I AM taking away one star for this, as Bluetooth connectivity is an important feature, but so is privacy.
