Another Masterfully Written Parable
Another well done Dekker thriller! Dekker is a very interesting writer for several reasons, but one of the most unique things about his writing is the way it evolves so rapidly from one novel to the next. I never know what to expect! That was especially true with Skin. It just didn't go the way I expected. For starters, I was pleasantly surprised because the book description makes it sound like a rehashing of House, a novel that Dekker recently co-authored with Frank Peretti. I liked House, but I wanted Skin to be its own novel. It definitely was.The story begins with five strangers thrown together in a small town through highly unusual circumstances. In the midst of a massive storm, a serial killer strikes-and keeps striking. For some unknown reason, he begins targeting this group of five and draws them into a twisted homicidal mind game. That would be enough groundwork for a thriller, but Dekker takes it further: reality itself seems to begin playing games with these five young men and women as the story takes on a Twilight Zone quality. As the truth gradually reveals itself, we discover along with the characters that real truth lies just beyond the skin of this world. One of the best things I like about Dekker is that he's a master teller of modern-day parables. That's really what his stories-especially the ones from the past two or three years, which are quite distinct from his earlier novels-are: parables.I'd definitely recommend Skin, but with a strong warning: it is not for the faint of heart! The violence in the book would make it difficult for a movie version to escape with anything less than an R rating. But if you can stomach that (it's gross and violent, but not excessively graphic), you might find Skin to be one of those novels that genuinely affects the way you perceive the world around you... and the world within you.

Good book, if a little disappointing
This was a very enjoyable book. In my opinion, it was a little slow at the start, but once I got into it, it was hard to put down. I only have two complaints about it. The first one, i can't say without ruining the book if you haven't read it yet, simply to say, I wish he would've ended it differently. The other complaint is more complex. The biggest reason I list Dekker as my favorite author is because every book of his that I've read (and I've read most of them) has ended with or contained within it an image of Christ, and His love for us (us being all humans, not just believers. Think of Samuel's unconditional love for Billy in Showdown). All of his books until this one, that is. The message behind this book is a good one (beauty is not merely what a person looks like), but there was no strong image of Christ.Even taking that complaint into account, I did enjoy this book, and would reccomend it.

Skin
Skin was a pretty good book. I will admit the whole time I was debating on who the killer was and what was going on and the ending didnt just pull a rabbit out of the hat I had actually considered it possible near the middle but was never certain what was going on and Im glad for it. The ending will leave you kicking yourself for not seeing it coming if you cant call it as I missed a crucial clue about the killer. Not Dekker's best novel but it still is another great one and has enough ties to the circle so that anyone who has read that will feel like they got a little more from the story than someone that hasnt.

Ted Dekker hits another out of the park
As an avid reader, I have to say that Ted Dekker's novels are probably some of the most gripping and enjoyable books I've read, and 'SKIN' is no exception. He completely draws you into the novel, with his vivid, descriptive nature; He has a gift of writing in a way that can make you feel as though you actually know the characters about which he writes. This book is a masterpiece - A brilliantly written work, with uncanny twists and surprises, and the ultimate battle between good and evil.I highly recommend this book if you enjoy a good page-turner that will entrance and engulf you from the very first chapter.

Not up to his usual standards...
Hope the author is not sick as this book is not up to his usual stardards of maintaining his usually background theme his books carry. As far as twists and turns go...it will keep you going. But just had a nagging feeling, partly due to the poor grammical editing, that this was a rush project (probably from a previously set aside idea) and I was not receiving what I usually did from him when I purchased the novel "Skin".Rating this partly as 3 because of the lack of the final touches of editing that I am accustomed to getting when I purchase a novel. Secondly this plot is degraded, or missing the hidden theme, compared to earlier novels ... something like what the Hollywood scriptwriters do to good books they "translate" into movies (like they did with Frank Perritti's books).

Some good material for a much shorter story
Normally I am a big fan of the creative Mr Dekker. However, I almost gave up on this one twice and only hung in there to the end to see what kind of twist he would produce this time. Indeed there was one, at about the 3/4 point - a good one - but with some big logic holes still left in it. Without the twist, this was a 2 star at the best, full of lame, immature, repetitive, weak dialog, strung together with cliches. A good hard nosed editor most likely could have turned this embarrassment into a very good short story. Hopefully I am wrong, and other Dekker fans will love it. However, I may skip a couple of the next ones hoping he will eventually get back into the form evidenced in Thr3e, Blink, and the trilogy. In the meantime, I hope he reads more Koontz and absorbs some of Dean's snappy dialog.
