a most engaging read with suspense, substance and lots of heart
While reading this review, consider and keep in mind that:A. I am relatively new to Dekker's workB. I rarely read novels, or have read very few novels (some, just few)C. I'd give this 4.5 or 4&1/2 stars if amazon would permit me.To briefly summarize my experience with Dekker. My initial exposure with him was reading his entire circle seris (minus Green) via the graphic novel version. I was blown out of the water with them, it was a intense mind-trip for me. I then read Immanual's Veins, and now Adam. So this is my second Dekker novel to date to read.I must say in summary, this is a great read. It's engaging and draws you in to the very very end you feel the entire book is one gigantic crescendo. Even reading the last chapters, when I saw how few pages of the book were left I was wondering how Dekker was going to pull off resolving and ending this immense amount of tension he had managed to build for 300 pages+I am sure there are plenty of reviews giving a great synopsis of story, plot and characters. So I won't beat a dead horse and repeat that here (plus I don't want to be responsible for any spoilers).I will tell a bit about my experience with the book. I will say that while I had some sense of what direction Dekker was headed with the story, there was always enough "blanks" to fill in that kept me eaglerly reading on wanting to find out more. It was like I could anticipate some things, but other things I really had no clue how they'd play out. I will say this, I was immensely surprised at the end at at least one point. So much so I sat up out of my bed talking aloud to myself saying "what!? I dont' believe this!" In genuine shock and utter amazement. I must say I never imagined a written story could engage me and throw me for such a emotional loop! I am a young male (in my late 20's) and this was quite a feat. Congratulations Mr. Dekker. You are a fine craftsman at your art.I will say this also about the story. I had no idea, no clue, what the story in the end was really about. I thought it was about a serial killer. I never imagined it could be about love. Not only love. But the profound depth of authentic love that comes shining through demonstrated in the story. And it was absolutely BEAUTIFUL. Not gonna lie, it made me cry! (mind you, I'm a young dude in his late 20's). Yes, I cried at the end. And I was deeply moved and touched with a beautiful illustration of love and its power. It was worth the read just for the profound moment of epiphany I had at the end.Readers you will enjoy the ride and the conclusion of the ride if you decide to take this one up.-Carlos

Gripping from Page 1
This book was my introduction to Ted Dekker's writings. I had seen his books at Christian bookstores here in Australia but for some reason had not picked them up - big, big mistake! Now, having an extended holiday over the summer months, I had time to do some reading and picked this novel up from the library.I was gripped from the fist page and almost became a recluse reading it - it was one of those books I could not put down. Suspense, thrills and a good plot are all in place but it also makes some thought-provoking points about the effects of abuse in childhood.Dekker opens with a story of the kidnapping of two children which occurred some years prior to the main storyline of the book and then interweaves that event (the kidnapping) into the hunt for a serial killer named Eve. The fact that it becomes apparent fairly early on in the book who the serial killer is, does not detract at all from the suspense or from the story.I liked the way a supposed article about the serial killer was weaved into the main story and Dekker's use of supposedly real photos from that killer's past is another nice touch. The Christian message is certainly there but is softly done. I believe the book would also make non-Christians think about the impact and influence of evil in the life of a person and the ways in which that evil may gain a foothold. It is this aspect which makes the novel thought-provoking, and issues such as the impact of abuse in childhood and its effects upon the individual when they are grown, should make people think as they enjoy the suspense and thrills.I do not want to say too much about the plot because that may ruin the book for those who have not read it but the characters are well written, the writing is very tight and the story is full of suspense from the start. The absence of any swearing or blasphemy is a great relief to me, as this often ruins the efforts of other thriller writers for me and the fact that Ted delivers such a superb effort without use of language such as that, shows it can be done. With this - my first Dekker book - I have become a great fan and have now read Kiss and am onto Skin, with Sinner and Three lined up to follow.Anyone looking for a novel combining suspense and thrills with a thought-provoking theme should certainly read Adam. It is well worth it!

A real thriller...
I have been a fan of Ted Dekker's for a long time. My first books were the Circle Trilogy. After those, I read Blink... After that, I just grabbed anything he ever wrote. Obsession was a great book; however, listening to it on CD was a great experience. I am on the road alot, so listening to books works out well for me. Some books of his are easy to listen to, but better to read. Anyway, over the years of Mr Dekkers writing I seem to have noticed a real draw towards the "creepy, scary, supernatural, dark side" coming out, and I wasn't positive I liked the change. But I couldn't stay away because I know the heart of this writer. There is always something true and good and a message that he is trying to get out. Adam (especially the cover of the book) looked like about as scary as you could get...however, I read it, and literally could not put it down. It was totally an adventure into another place and person and situation than I've ever been before. Ted Dekker always takes you where you've never been before, and stretches your imagination to the enth degree. Satanic powers are real and that is what makes this book so intense. The battle rages in a demention that we cannot see with our eyes (most of the time), and I do believe we would be much more careful as Christians and believers, if we truly saw the enemy at work in that other realm. Mr Dekker, you truly have a gift.

I think that this book shows the evil that some people are capable of. It also shows us that perverting religion allows the devil in and anyone who does not believe in anything is more vulnerable to this than anyone who has beliefs.

Don't recommend it
Just a quick review- I have read other books from Ted Dekker, and I have found that he is a very skilled and good writer, and has the ability to take you deep into his stories. But Some of his thrillers like "Adam" There is to much emphasis in lifting Satan and his evil power high. I would like to see Ted Dekker to continue to focus on the supernatural both sides, but highlighting Gods power, and what he is able to do in peoples lives if only we believe. Why? Because we live in a world that DESPERATELY NEEDS HIS POWER! I know this from my own personal experience, I had a death experience where I saw Satan and he was ready to take me to hell with him, but when I called on the name above all names, "JESUS" Jesus came and rescued me from Satan's hands. That was 19 years ago, and since then JESUS/GOD have my undivided attention. I believe people reading your books are going through these similar kinds of experiences and are even being tormented by evil spirits, so I believe they urgently need to hear about the SUPERNATURAL POWER OF GOD WHICH IS REAL! And way more POWERFUL then the enemies power, So that people will be set FREE! You Ted Dekker already have been given the skilled as a writer to able able to presented to the people. I will continue to read your books, as I truly love you as a writer and have learned much from you, but in sincerity, I will stay away from books like Adam. Blessings in Jesus.Andrea Edwards.
