Best French to English dictionary
I bought this for taking the CIOL DipTrans exam. I had a big Collins Robert but it wasn't up to the job. This has more detail, much better for translation work, along with a Larousse, and the "blue book" dictionary of culural references.

Top top dictionary!!
The best dictionary I ever had!! It is very heavy, but gives you access to the online version too.

Could be tighter bound to control several kilos of erudition .

Excellent dictionary; better than Collins and cheaper too!
I bought this dictionary without really assessing the market because I trusted an Oxford dictionary to be the best. Since then I have used the equivilant Collins-Robert (CR) dictionary in school, and while that in itself is very good, I'm still glad that I bought Oxford-Hachette. The typeface is clear, it has a vast array of sample letters, bills, contracts etc. in the middle section to assist people such as students who are going to live in France, and most importantly it has a HUGE range of vocabulary. Despite being cheaper than CR, it actually appears thicker, and it also comes with an accurate pronunciation CD-ROM. There isn't much to choose between them in terms of vocab, but I'd choose Oxford-Hachette over Collins-Robert simply because of the many helpful extras and it being a bit cheaper.

Very complete. Essential.
A 'proper' big dictionary. There are times, even in these days of instant access to information, when only a whopping great book with a couple of thousand pages will do, and you'll be glad you had this on your bookshelf when those times arise. It's everything you could want from a dictionary. The thing about French-English dictionaries is that you've got to get the biggest you can lift. Why? Because translation dictionaries are really only half the size they appear to be – everything is in effect duplicated. Think about it. I bought this because I soon found that a mid-sized dictionary didn't have enough words, and too often not the relatively obscure words I was starting to look up, again because they're really only half the size you think they are. I wouldn't be without this, cumbersome as it is. I'll probably keep it forever.

This dictionary has everything!
This dictionary has everything. Initially I found it almost too comprehensive and a it was a bit difficult sometimes to find the word or use of the word that I was actually looking for amongst the mass of information. Now I'm getting used to it, I realise that it has everything in you could possibly need: words, phrases, accurate and up-to-date translations, advice on grammar, a section on verbs, sample letters, CVs and resumes, guides to the internet and email, cultural notes, specific additional information such as colours, numbers, measurements and much, much more. It's hard to think of anything more Oxford could have packed into this amazing dictionary. It's clearly laid out with a helpful colour scheme and clear divided sections. Be warned though, it is big and it is quite heavy!
