Best charcoal pencils
These are my favorite and work well with smooth newsprint! I hand sharpen mine with a razor - tedious but worth it :)

careful
these 6b extra soft have very delicate points. dont use pressure unless when u really need to cuz the point tip will likely break. very soft n delicate. but blacks are very velvety smooth n dark. easy to sharpen.

very useful
Super soft, I use them for the under drawing for paintings. A great tool.

Nothing like them!
General charcoal pencils are indispensable! Especially the super-soft 6Bs. I fill up my sketch books using these pencils, the 6Bs for shading and emphasis, the 2Bs for basic drawing. Unfortunately, the 6Bs go pretty fast, but that’s the nature of them. Dark and velvety. I can’t find another brand that compares.

The charcoal has hard scratchy pieces in it!
These are not like they used to be! Generals charcoal pencils use to be nice and soft, givingyou a smooth, easy to blend charcoal. As of late, there are hard pieces in it that have a tendencyto scratch my paper and once in a while I also get rubbery pieces in it.

Simple, well made 6B pencils
One of the few charcoal pencils that you can get in 6 B. Smooth, dark & does the job. Hope they don't stop making it. All the other companies just make "dark, med, light-"---without being able to tell if its soft or firm etc. Some feel like they use clay or some other filler like a conte-style crayon, which gives an entirely different product when drawing.
